Ileann Powery has been crowned Miss Universe Cayman Islands.

Powery, 25, of West Bay beat out four other contestants to claim the coveted crown on Saturday 2 Sept., in front of a capacity ballroom at the Westin resort.

Contestants Sydonie Barrett and Tracey Campbell were selected as first and second runners-up, respectively.

In addition to being an entrepreneurial beauty queen, Powery is a national volleyball player who has competed in 19 tournaments across 11 countries.

During the question-and-answer segment of the pageant, all five contestants were asked, “What do you think is the most effective tool for protecting the environment and why?”

“I believe your voice is the most effective tool that you could ever have,” replied Powery.

“However, not just your voice, but putting it into action there is social media there is word of mouth, [and] you are able to spread a message and make it impactful and powerful.”

She also said small daily habits can make a difference for the world.

She added, “Use your voices. You are powerful. You are more than enough.”

In a statement sent to the Compass on Powery’s win, Derri Lee, the national director of the Miss Universe Cayman Islands organisation, said, “We are delighted and look forward to a successful year with Ms. Powery. We wish all contestants all the best in their future endeavours and thank them for choosing our platform.”
